My name is Jacqui O’Driscoll and I work for the Government of Jersey in the Modernisation and Digital Department as an Innovation Manager.
What my job involves
As Innovation Manager it is my job to review our processes, products, and services and identify new opportunities for improvements.
How I got into this profession
I worked my way up. I began my tech career as an IT helpdesk analyst nearly 20 years ago. I went on to be a business analyst, forms developer, product manager and then Digital Delivery Manager. Throughout all of these positions were some common threads, I like solving problems, being creative and embracing change.
Qualifications or skills needed for the role
You need to be creative and passionate about the ideas you and your team are creating and believe in your ability to deliver. You need to be good at pitching those ideas and inspiring your audience with the art of the possible. You also need to show patience towards those who need more time to absorb what you are proposing and nurture them through the change.
Business Analysis / Project Management / Service Management qualifications are useful to have.
Being a women in tech
During the course of my career I have worked in mostly male-dominated industries, from being a professional chef and then into tech. I really haven’t let it be part of my thinking that there wasn’t a role or job I couldn’t get. I believe a positive attitude and professionalism, along with a lot of hard work, has helped me overcome any struggles I could have potentially faced. I am extremely fortunate to have a very supportive team, both male and female.
What I enjoy most about the job
Being able to take an exciting idea, pitch it, design it and then make it into a reality.
An exciting project I’ve been involved in
I was part of the team who were tasked with getting essential government services available online in a very short space of time when the public offices had to close due to COVID-19. It was hectic but very rewarding each time a new service went live!
I just love spending time with my family, friends and rescue dog Boris! I also like to get out on my new e-bike! And who doesn’t love a good box set!
